Letters for Gender Affirming Care
Currently, most insurers require that trans individuals obtain letters from mental health providers affirming their decisional capacity to receive gender-confirmation procedures. For some folks, the inability to be assessed for a letter of support keeps them from lifesaving care.
To address this need, I am offering free (or pay as you prefer) assessment services specifically for trans individuals seeking letters of support for gender confirmation procedures. While I cannot promise that you will receive a letter after meeting with me (as this depends on how the assessment goes), I can share that I have never met a client for whom I was unable to provide such a letter.
We Will Work Best Together if You Meet These Criteria
Aged 18 and older
Willing and able to engage in assessment meetings via video-conferencing telehealth
Located in the state of Washington or any PSYPACT state (click the link to see if your state is included—35 are!)
Schedule flexibility on meeting times during Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours
Knowledge of which gender confirmation procedures you’re considering at this time (and ideally which clinician will be providing the care)
What to Expect from Your Assessment
Meeting 1-4 times (average 2 times) for 50-minute assessment sessions to participate in a clinical interview and receive diagnostic feedback
Topics covered include: mental health, physical health, and social history, to include timeline of gender awareness and/or dysphoria
After the assessment is completed, expect a turnaround time of 2-4 weeks for letter writing
Letters are written by a certified clinical psychologist (me) and will be consistent with WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) standards
Letters are signed and delivered directly to you; both digital and hard copy available
Financial Information
You may pay as much or as little as you prefer for a gender confirmation procedure letter assessment. I would like to reduce barriers to care for trans clients, and am not setting any minimum payment expectations.
You do not need to prove financial burden or provide any information about your financials to qualify for care. I will ask you what hourly rate you prefer and will take you at your word.
Maximum payment would be at my hourly rate. Your ability to pay for assessment and/or letter writing time will subsidize access for other trans clients for this same service.
